Step by step guide to building a boat spurdog muppet rig

1. Take 8-feet of 100lb mono.

2. At one end tie on a large size 3/0 oval split ring for weight attachment.

3. About 30-inches above the split ring, tie in a loop using a blood loop knot. Make sure the loop when the knot is tightened is a good 6 to 8-inches long.
4. Tie in another blood loop 30-inches above this.

5. At the free end of 100lb mono add a strong size 2/0 swivel.

6. Cut one strand of the loop close to the knot to form a single hook length.

7. Slide on a luminous green muppet and a 5mm bead to each hook length.

8. Now tie on a size 6/0 Mustad O’Shaughnessy 3406 hook to each hook trace to complete the rig.

The 100lb mono will combat the teeth of spurdog if you use a cheaper hard monofilament. Not a soft one! 80lb Fluorocarbon is also excellent and very resilient to rubbing by sharp teeth. Some anglers use short length of 60lb wire on the hook trace, but this is rarely necessary providing you regularly check for trace weakness.
