I managed to get down to the beach last night for 7pm, to fish the last hour of the ebb and first few hours of the flood, the sea was absolutely flat and calm with the odd swimmer still splashing about. I quickly rigged up two rods with two hook clipped down rigs, baited with fresh lug pumped that morning. The gulls were going mad about 100yrds out, looked like white bait shoals. Both baits were sent on their way behind 5oz leads and the wait began. For the first 2hrs, the rod tips remained stubbornly still, and the perfectly presented baits came back looking pristine, not even a crab having a nibble! Things looked dire. As the sun finally dropped below the sea wall and the tide was flooding in, I had a good rattle then a slack liner on the left hand rod, on the retrieve, I could feel a good weight darting left and right and I thought it could be a bass, but it turned out to be an eel of about a pound. The weed picked up after that which was irritating but not the end of the world. After missing another bite, I’d lost the light, and left the head torch at home, so it was time to pack up and wend my way home.
