I've just come back from a relaxing week fishing in Sutherland for trout. It was fantastic to get away from work for a week and sample a location where very few people visit. With the mad rush of everybody visiting North Wales these days, it was great to get away from the crowds and head north.

The estate I stayed at had both a loch and five miles of river (a tributary of the Helmsdale) to have a crack at. While the first day was vertical rain, the weather calmed down from Tuesday onwards with overcast and some sunny days, with very little rain. The loch offers superb brown trout fishing, in terms of sheer numbers. Tactics for the days on the loch were quite simple. Find the bank where the wind was blowing into and then head up to the other end of this bank and then fish it all the way down. Using step and cast tactics, you can cover loads of water and pick out the territorial areas the trout are holding up in. Barely changed a fly the whole trip, with a Zulu variant I tied up doing the business for the whole of the trip. It was quite nice to see that the flies I had tied up lasted for a fair few trout as well :ROFLMAO:

Evenings were passed by with a couple of beers and a dram or two while soaking in the tranquillity and the very short, light nights.
