A step by step guide to building a boat tope mono rig.

The most popular tope rig is a simple sliding ledger using 150lb commercial mono.

1 - Using a 60lb/80lb shock leader slide on to this a zip slider and a 5mm bead and to the end of the leader tie on a size 2 rolling swivel.

2 - To the free eye of the size 2 swivel crimp on 46-inches of 150lb mono. It’s easier to crimp the heavy mono, but alternatively a three or four turn Grinner knot is just as effective. Pull the knot tight though, via the tag end, with pliers.

3 - Take the free end of the heavy mono and slide on two crimps. Slide on a Mustad Viking 79515 hook size 6/0 and pass the free end of 150lb line through the crimp nearest the hook ready for securing. Pass the free end of line through the top crimp to form a loop in the line about 8-inches long and crimp in place to secure the loop. This gives a double section of line that combats the teeth of the tope.

4 - Now crimp the bottom crimp in place above the hook but leaving the hook enough room to freely move around in for natural bait presentation.
