Dead ray at Christchurch

Not a species I know much about as do not fish for them, but out of interest would the fish remains pictured weigh around five or six pounds when intact?

Yeah maybe female, would think the gonads are a lot longer.
Hard to tell if gonads are underneath or that’s just flaps of wing skin?
Yeah no idea, I've never caught thornbacks and at the time it didn't occur me check if it was female.

I tried to pick it up and it was HEAVY - this was at the low tide line so suspect it was caught the night before and left there.

The comms think nothing of winging rays, or gutting fish alive. Whatever is quickest and most convenient. To be fair oftentimes they haven't the luxury of being considerate if it's rough, or time is of the essence.

Anglers are just as bad. Who here just let mackerel flap themselves to death? I'll put my thumb in their mouth and bend the head backwards, but I've never seen other anglers do it, and I've fished with plenty.

Yeah fish killed using the Ikejime method (spiked, bled, and gutted straight away) are very expensive - for high end restaurants and fancy Sushi joints only.

Just as you do I showed my cousin how to snap mackerel necks and to be fair to him he's stuck to doing so BUT the old timers on the pier NO CHANCE straight into the bucket regardless of size. And as for my dad he thinks I'm weirdo for spiking fish.

Another expensive saying is “line caught”
Yeah right…say what they like to add a premium

I do now. Didn’t at one time I admit, but have learned a bit since then
