What an absolutely batsh*t crazy session last night!!
Met up with Nathan Yates and Michael Collins for a bash at the hounds. (Nice to meet you Michael!) We’d all had a chat before getting set up and whatnot and the weather was good. It was calm and hadn’t rained all afternoon like it was supposed to. We were expecting a bit though so had our shelters up ready.
We’d not long had our bait in the water when Nath had a take and after battling with a little weed on the leader knot, we got the fish in. A great start at 12lbs …and it was still daylight!!
He’d been over to me to get a quick snap and had just returned the fish when I had a slack line. I began to wind in when it happened….
Out of seemingly nowhere, some sort of mini-monsoon hit us, to the degree that not one of us have seen before.
The wind picked up to at least 70mph if not more, the rain was horizontal and akin to hail, you couldn’t see 5m in front of you!
I wound my rod in as fast as I could whilst being pelted by the instant torrent of weather, thankfully Nath was at my bivvy and grabbed it before it blew away. I got my gear to the shore and ran over to sort my shelter out whilst Nath legged back to his own set up. His tripod and rods had gone over and were laying on the beach. All I could do was hunker down in my bivvy and hold on to it. Trying to re-secure it was literally impossible with the wind as it was, it was absolutely insane!!
After maybe 10mins, the rain eased and the wind died down again enough for us to regroup and sort our gear out at least!
I’ve only ever had one similar experience of an instant flash storm like this before but this one was worse I think, it was crazy!!!
As the weather moved on, the sea calmed down again and we were back to fishing. I sent both rods back out and wasn’t waiting too long for a bite. As I lifted in to the fish, typically, my other rod started screaming off!!
I ended up landing both, not monsters at 6lbs 14oz and 4lbs 12oz but well happy to get a couple after a tough week or so.
The night went on but the wind swung round NW way earlier than predicted and it was strong too. This brought the weed with it and fishing became impossible. Nath had another about 4lbs and I had a 3-4lbs pup too but the wind had made it all feel very un-hound like and we gave up not long into the ebb. We’re both on 20 for the year now so it was nice to get a couple out each.
Weird night. Went from perfect to tsunami to near perfect to unfishable all in a matter of hours!!
