Fished Paddys Gap, Milford on Sea, last night. I was wandering down there in the dark, head down watching my footing and looked up to see a guy fishing. I was surprised I had got so close, without seeing him sitting in the dark. I said sorry I had not seen him. We had a good old chat, then asked what forums he was on, and was pleased to be in the company of Zigzagfreddie. I introduced myself and said he should join this forum which he has. Welcome mate. Good to meet people who you feel you know from reading their reports.

I followed his directions to a spot I had been told about. Its a little awkward as you are fishing a concrete wall with huge rocks the sea side of it. I was finding that my leader knot was fouling the top eye with weed, just at the point that my tackle was just getting to the rocks. As it goes all went well and no tackle losses over the night.

2 rods with 3/0 pulleys, one on fish baits one on worm, cause I had loads of them! Handling frozen bait in the current cold conditions resulted in a really painful thumb. I knew that would pass though. First cast gave me a nice bass around 300mm on the worm bait. We are off and not a dog!

Second cast gave me a small pout that went back out as live bait.

I set up a light scratching rod and just see a little tickle on it. Picked up the rod and waited and was rewarded with a very lively tussle with a strap conger. Great sport on the light rod. The top eye jammed at the wrong moment and l was worried the fish would get itself into the rocks. I catch lots of wrasse and they are masters at doing that! Once I cleared the eye it was still on and clear and I managed to float it over the rocks to safety. Only around 30" 750mm but it certainly put a bend in the light rod.

I had something else on the next cast, but lost it into a pool just the other side of the concrete. I looked for it in there, but it was hiding!

I was expecting it to go quiet around the top of the tide so was thinking of a slow pack up. Then the scratching rod went again and at first I thought it was another strap. Whatever it was, was not happy and gave a good account of itself with some decent lunges. I walked up the beach to change the leader knot to rocks position and again floated the fish over onto the beach. Not the biggest bass I have had, but it was chunky for its length. Worthy of a picture. Typical, just as they are no longer take-able I get two! I have had a few lately on a size 6 hook with half a squid head on!

Still no rays, but they are coming!

Nice one Goatee - great report and well done on the December Bass! ????

well done on the bass, i've looked at paddys a couple of times over the years but those rocks tend to put me off it a bit.

I am there now! Having the same probs with weed on the leader knot jamming the top eye just at the worst time. Just a pout. Quieter than the other day.
