South Coast Hard work.... Chesil.

nice report there pete, with a few bass to save the day. with a month of calm i recon the weed has grown well on the reefs & the big tide as much as the rough weather is starting to tear it up , though i saw none to speak of thursday. surprised others like me are having trouble finding species of any size other than bass , where are the rays? not missing the eels much though. :D

Good idea to go against the grain once in awhile.

Nice report Pete!! Gotta be in it to win it. Bass to the rescue
For sure..... thing is on a normal year, I would have had over 20 plaice, 20 sole and half a dozen codling by now especially give 100% perfect bait and conditions.
Its a shadow of previous years.
Without smuts n bass..... this year would have been a disaster.

Just look at it as a fallow year, hopefully it’ll return to normal.

Yep I have thrashed away at it this year for the square route of not a lot..... as we head into the best month of the year I wonder if there is a food source so plentyful that the fish aint intetested in our offerings.
The amount of whitebait n sprats out there is astonishing, the fish finders on the boats are black from top to bottom the moment they get out of West Bay.
I see obvious shrimp/prawn damage on our baits quite a bit and hermit marks on squid at range.
I think the bass have an almost conditioned behaviour and thats whats saving my ass.
So what to do....
Whilst coming out of West Bay in my boat at low water on a "super tide" I took a video of a big bit of structure and we mapped out the area a bit and found a lot more.
So its the heavy gear next and some float spinning gear and lets see whats what..... frankly Alex I feel a little bit like u with the geat Ness, Chesil at least for the moment is a poor shadow of previous years and I know it well.
I am happy to look at this as an opportunity to switch it up..... good job I have a shed full of leads.
We always see some rogue pollock and big eels on chesil in the Autumn I wonder if this mark is where they come from..... guess I am about find out.

Great report and a cracking bass , I like chesil but it’s a long drive from plymouth
When its fishing well John its worth the drive, but at the mo I have been looking down towards you!!!
It could just explode into life I have seen it do that in 2015 August was a disaster October absolutely astonishing.
If you ever fancy a Friday night up here let me know and I will join you...... drop me a PM.
Always enjoy your reports!.

Good effort Pete and bass are always welcome, but if you’re struggling down there, I don’t think I’ll be rushing down just yet!

We are down a week on Monday. I’m hoping for a bit of calm so I can winkle some plaice out.

250 yards east of where we had those bass n sole a month ago..... there is a feck off bit of clay at 90 yards see you there friday if you fancy it?
4pm??
Bring me half a pounda rag and I will bring u 2 wraps of fresh blacks!
@Tatunka joe
Anyone else fancy a chuck let me know...... all welcome.
Deal see you then might be later than 4 tho bey ?

Nice one Pete and gang!
After really struggling ourselves for said targets with worm i thought we would do a mid channel trip yesterday. 40miles out and ive never seen so much bait on the surface! Macks chasing them and due to it being super calm and clear water you could see the action quite far down. Including some of the biggest dolphins i have ever seen.
The bass strangely were abundant this far off shore. They are not known to be where we were fishing! some very weird shapes to the bass including a 6.5lb at 40cm it was like a bream!

lots of doubles and some we just could not control
