    Cock clams.

From what I understand, bass are pretty opportunist feeders and will take any old crap at times. I’ve had a fair few on manky pink squid tbh. Definitely live mackie when they’re feeding on them is a top bait though.

    Cock clams.

Given the choice I would prefer fresh mackerel over bluey, but I find frozen bluey way out fishes frozen mac for bass. Unfortunately the mackies are more sporadic on this coast and we don’t have the deeper water beaches with little tide movement where mackie are likely to show up at some point...

South Coast 7.5. playing on chesil.

Well done for getting out, looks pretty lush down there anyway!

    Cock clams.

Yes it might seem surprising but I’ve probably had more larger bass and more bites on whole or half bluey here than other baits put together. That’s on our surf beaches, other marks I may use something else depending on season. Ray will also take it a fair bit too. Fresh worm can and does catch...

South West Early season ain’t so bad

Both! It’s pretty flat and yes we have a huge tidal range. I wade out about thigh height and then cast, but I’d imagine the depth from that isn’t much more than four to five feet at most. I’ve done miscasts before but decided to leave it as the tide is coming in, then caught a ray a few minutes...

    Flatties

Are you using braid? That can sometimes make even bumps on the seabed feel like bites at times. Spiders are a possibility maybe?

    Flatties

It’s surprising how long you have to leave it sometimes. Depends how hard they’re feeding

    Flatties

Oh, forgot to add - I have caught quite a few plaice on the boat drifting with baited spoons. They can work quite well on their day but you need the right drift speed and they’re certainly not essential. I’ve outfished others using them some days, and other days they’ve been poor. You can’t...

    Flatties

You may be doing this anyway, but as soon as you feel a take/rattle, let the plenty of slack line out to give the flattie plenty of time to take the bait. By plenty I mean several metres off the reel. Sometimes it’s worth doing a couple of times to ensure the fish has lots of time. Obviously...

    Prawns...

Had some cracking hounds on live prawns but needs to be on a mark where I can fish a prawn trap while fishing. Dogfish love them too 🙄🙄🙄

"Fishing knives" and the law re knives in public places

It’s all been said but just remembered I did ask a police inspector about this once. He basically said if it’s in a tackle box etc and you’re clearly engaged in or going to fishing, obviously fine. I asked (hypothetically) what if a butcher walked along the high street carrying his knives in...
