Fished the Salcombe estuary last night, was a very pleasant evening with a break in the winds making it very calm there. First casts out in daylight and gets a little rattle straight away, resulting in a baby Plaice, blank saved early on, bit quiet for nearly an hour, then another small rattle, silver Eel this time, dusk came, then past and the next bite wasn't till it was dark, a far better knock and nice fight from a spirited Bass, just under size at 15 inches, after popping him back I went to rebait and the trace was wriggling still, I didn't notice the tiny Pouting on the hook above the one the Bass took, fish number 4.
Another hour past before the next bite came from another schoolie, after that was getting very small bites every so often and manage to finally hook one, another very small Pouting.
Had to wait well over a hour for the next fish, was still getting the odd tiny rattle, but one rod kept giving a a little longer knocks, it feltt like a small Pouting on the way in, but through the weed and small surf a strange looking Pouting came out, Wow now thats not a pouting. Now in nearly 30 years of fishing this beach Ive never had one of these or heard of one from here, a lovely little Sole, a great surprise, some pics "and away" he swam.
Plugged on for another hour but the bites dried up, so was time to pack up and head home, a slow but rewarding session.
