Jumped on the boat at Laugharne 7am , just 4 of us plus the skipper , with a view to heading west with the ebb to Pendine , Saundersfoot and Tenby. None of the mackerel marks produced so after a couple of hours the skipper put the hand brake on so and we had an hour fishing with frozen baits , drinking tea and eating cake. Just a few doggies and we up anchored and tried again for fresh bait to target the tope, We got all the way to Tenby before we caught some stonking mackerel but not many so we ended up in Caldey sound where we had loads of mackerel and scad ,including a few clonkers. Anchored in the Boghole which is a known mark but apart from a few launce to the sleeper rods with shrimp rigs and Sabikis we only had doggies and one double figure bull huss. The boat chuggs along at 8/10 knots so we started the return journey , stopping at a few marks for bass but no joy. Eventually we got to our final mark, between Gingst point and the Carmarthen bar and started catching small bass and smoothies on lug. If we switched to mackerel bait for the bigger bass we were bitten off by tope. Two of the guys put on tope traces and we had a few to the boat up to 25lb. Only two in size bass , 45 cm and 48cm but loads of little buggers. Cracking day to be out with loads of sun and enough breeze to stop it from being too hot. Cake is the staple diet on these trips and between the four of us we got through 2 large sponges and about 20 welsh cakes washed down with 6 or 7 mugs of tea. Back at the tidal jetty for 7pm and took my bass around to a neighbour who supplies me with tomatoes through the season. Out again on that boat in 2 weeks but going out tomorrow toping and bassing on a fast Cat from Saundersfoot. Great boat but just one cuppa!
