Unicorn buckets & spades & an amusing dogfish first trip of 2023
After much studying of the weather forecast yesterday looked to be the only break in the weather & the traditional Xmas family outing to Lyme was planned. On arrival my daughter was less than impressed with the fact I hadn’t packed one of her 200 buckets & spades but had remembered my cool bag & ice block.
When I informed my partner they sell buckets & spades in the fishing shop I was told there were plenty of other shops that sell them too! And £7.50 later not just any but a unicorn bucket & spade joined our collection & we joined the 50%of the south west population on the beach while the other 50% jammed the car park!
Incase your wondering what the relevance of the above has at this point, well perhaps there’s an omen in there somewhere and it’s also about now I realize my first session of the year & I will be using up the old refrozen bait I have, nevertheless glad of the chance to go I load up & later that day head off. I considered Monmouth beach but due to the amount of people there earlier & the fact it looked quite weedy I headed for the big beach spurred on by Chesil Pete’s catch report.
Fortunately as I arrived at 6pm it looked to have cleared out from what I imagined it was like during the day and I grabbed a spot in a manageable walk much to my relief.
Set up by 6.30pm the skies remained largely clear only the odd drop of rain & temperature remained fairly mild. Slight breeze.
Low tide 8.30 pm ish high 3am ish about 3.6m and approaching spring & almost full moon.
Biggish breakers but hardly any tidal pull compared to recent trips so no shingling.
Bites were spread out over the night a bit few & far between with squid & lug accounting for most of the fish. Short pulleys best as longer ones kept tangling.
Nothing on tiger prawns or half mackerel.
Packed up about 3am
So to end the story catch of the night was of course a “unicorn” followed by a half sensible eel which took itself off back to sea bonus, a nice pout, several dogfish including an amusing one, if I curl up in a ball and keep my eyes shut you can’t see me & I haven’t been caught reminded me of my daughter & her bucket & spade & the fact I should get going.
So first trip it the year & the big beach was kind to me this time.
Ps will be in touch with those of you that have offered some help at some point thanks in advance.
