I have been wanting one for ages (as they are the ones to have apparently) but they have been out of stock everywhere this year. About 3 weeks ago Veals announced ‘back in stock’ so I immediately put my order in for the 7’ Match. When it arrived a couple of days later my excitement very quickly turned to disappointment as I unwrapped it to find the components are exactly the same as in identical to the much cheaper unnamed rest I bought off e bay a couple of years ago, even down to the cheap and nasty mis shaped cups to the flimsy weight hook. At least the unwanted leg lock kit which came with the cheaper rest will fit the Golds one so I’m glad I didn’t pay even more money for the Super Match which has the leg lock kit.
Anyone else bought one of these recently?

Nope, I brought an extendable Shakespeare Salt a few years ago and came with a thick carry pouch, tough as old boots and will last a longtime.

I bought the supermatch a few years back, been a good rest, although I did swap the front rest out for U cups.
Oh and I have somehow broken the clamping bit on the bottom cup bar.... Still works but is wonky and needs replacing.
Ovrrall though done its job well and it's nice and stable.

I bought , i think, the supermatch last year. Not been out of the wrapper yet, still using my old breakaway one.

It is a flipping heavy thing to be lugging about.

I suspect I will have to swop the rod butt cups and bar as I use fs reels and I can see they will be too close together.
I wonder if the Golds rests of a few years back we’re more substantial than todays model….I really am unimpressed…

I havnt weighed them but I would say the Golds is lighter than the Diawa one I have been using for many years.

My first one so didn't have anything to compare it to, only the breakaway and that is a totally different rest.

Never thought of the closeness as I am on FS too.

Have you got any pictures Goaty?

I love my Golds, nice and light, does what it says on the tin, never had any problems with it.

Just wondering if the quality has slipped on the latest versions?

The weight hook does look a bit flimsy but I haven’t managed to break mine yet, and I’ve weighed a near 14lb hound on it

Tomorrow Mr Fish. The cups are really thin plastic and crappy and the hook dosnt fill me with confidence. It’s absolutely identical to a cheapie I bought a couple of years ago. Only difference is the Golds sticker on it!

Do you have to clip a sack of stones on it to stop it falling over?

There seems to be a train of thought that the best tripods are either Ian Golds or Shakespeare salt. I bought the Salt as it was on offer 2nd hand as new for £30. Also have the Shakespeare Agility rod quiver and it has a dedicated pocket & straps for the tripod bag to attach to.

Very pleased with the Shakey tripod quality. Folks says it's heavy but you aren't going to get stability & quality from something made out of thin low grade components. It has only gone over once, when the rig picked up a huge clump of weed which dragged everything over. Overall, very pleased with it. I like the fact that it comes with a quality dedicated bag too.
