The last ones in Torbay were towards the end of December. They seemed to leave when large numbers of whiting and sardines turned up. Also the water clarity has been hit or miss due to the winds. There were some nice sized ones in December with bodies 30-35cm but not sure what they would weigh.
I headed off to Slapton this morning expecting a plague of whiting so only put in a couple of squid heads and wings and two mackerel fillets intending to use the whiting as bait.
I arrived at 6.15 and fishing by 6.30. Bait still frozen so a two hook flapper and a tentacle on each hook. After 10...
I was thinking of trying first thing tomorrow but now not quite as keen. If I go I think whole whiting/fillets on at least one rod to stop the smaller ones.
A few of the whiting had anchovies in their mouths and there were some gannets about. Loads of mackerel, herrings and sardines in torbay now so no reason why they won't be there.
Tried this morning and caught 5 dogfish and lots of whiting. Had one decent bite with the rod bent over and line peeling off the reel only to lift into nothing
