A mate of mine won a silent auction, at the kids school fundraiser, for an evening out on Supernova 2, from Weymouth.
The day chosen was Saturday 18th ⁸so that we could take the kids along, and it was to be 6 until dark.
Our party was four adults and seven children under the age of 12, we had the help of two deckhands as well as the skipper.
As the tide height dictated we had to wait for the town bridge to lift, at six, to get on our way. Twenty or so minutes of bumpy, but not unpleasant ( we did have to separate the three young girls as they had started with the "how you feeling"..." do you feel sick yet?" Games ), motoring later we were out of the harbour to the west and anchoring somewhere towards the end of Portland.
After a quick lesson, on letting line out and making sure about keeping contact with the bottom, our first little girl lets down her two hook rig with squid strips and 10oz lead and we immediately hear
" Somethings pulling on it" and that was the start of, basically, a bream a chuck for around an hour. The lads doing the baiting up and unhooking were none stop and did a brilliant job, not a single hook or bream spike pierced anyones skin, the bin was filling fast with keepers so the decision was made to return all further fish caught, with this the younger children decided their arms ached too much to just wind fish in to look at.
Darkness switched off the bites so it was deck lights on and keep everyone out of the way so the gutting of fish and cleaning process could happen whilst we headed back in.
A chipshop supper rounded off events perfectly, the skipper had put us in just the right spot and each of the four families took home a bag of 8 bream, the heaviest of ours went 2.5lbs gutted.
I don't really like boats but would certainly do a trip like that again.
