I've been looking at these for a few days after reading an article/advert in Sea Fishing magazine.
Does anyone use them for lure fishing..or anything else for that matter.
Any good? They certainly look the nuts with decent braid capacity and line retrieve.
Any comments?
This kind of thing....

I have an Abu Silver Max and a Diawa one, think they cost about £40 each. Both have mags but only use mono on them.

ABU Black Max here. Was bought as an intro to the bait caster thing together with an ABU rod with the trigger grip. Not used in sea, but has been good for freshwater Pike fishing and general drop shot type stuff.

I use them for all my lure fishing, from ultra light (2-5g) upto heavy (200g).
They take practice but I find them more accurate in casting, much smoother than fixed spool reels and more balanced on the rod.
You need to either get a saltwater version or clean it everytime you use it in the salt.

So casting lighter lures is not an issue then? I was concerned there wouldn't be enough weight to pull the line off the spool.

I just set the drags low on mine and can cast a 5 to 20gm lure no problem. Mine are matched to a Savage Gear trigger grip rod.

Hmmm.....damn it! That looks great....it might even rekindle my interest in fresh water fishing. I have to sell something first though!
@Seabob ...thanks for the video. I may even be able to fish during lockdown now if I can find a pond around me somewhere.

Don't forget the close season for fresh water fishing March through June.

To cast ultra light lures you do need a specialist reel and lots and lots of practice.,anything above 10g just needs any reel and practice.

Yep...not sure I'll be chucking anything really lightweight....but you never know.?

Looks OK, and I think if you can get on with a multiplier, you'll be OK with a baitcaster. I don't like either. I gained a lovely Quantum TG400cx baitcaster and was getting birds nests every other cast. Great little reel - I just couldn't master it.

I wouldn't buy anything again from AliExpress (or any of these Chinese sites) having been stitched up once, as on the AliExpress thread.

Tramps, it does need practice to master a multiplier reel, unlike a coffee grinder unless you forget to hold the line between the reel and 1st ring eye and let go at the cast. Thumb on multi reel line and let go with rod at 60 degrees if off the ground casting, always worth checking the drag to ensure when holding the rod up the lure/weight drops not to fast to the ground when releasing lever/button etc.
I always warm water wash my reels/rods after salt water fishing and dry them off. Re-oil the reels when dry (overnight) the next day ready for the next trip.

I just don't seem to be able to program my thumb to stop the spool at the right time, maybe because I'm a Southpaw! I've been able to chuck a rig out with a multiplier, it's after the weight touches down I end up in the cart! Unpicking Bird's nests is no fun, especially after dusk! As mentioned on a previous thread, I went into a tackle shop some years ago to buy a beachcaster, and got talked into buying a multiplier with it, as part of a combo deal offer. What I didn't know at the time was that level wind reels are not the best for shore work. I've got used to using 'coffee grinders', with a casting cannon on my bigger rods, and I see no reason to change, especially having bought a couple of new reels over the last 6 months. Everyone to their own, and I'll stick to my 'coffee grinders'. Much easier in the dark too, and I think my Conti rod is rung for F/S anyway.

Which leads on to another of my stubborn traits! Not long after buying the Conti rod, I bought a £80 same brand F/S reel to match it, and spooled it up with 25Lb KastKing braid. Every 4th cast or so, I was getting big wind knots halfway between the rod tip & end tackle. Took it home, stripped some line off as thought I may have overfilled it, no change, so back to mono on the other spool. No problems. Since then, the bale arm roller has fallen apart so that reel is now regretfully redundant. Maybe I'm just an old stick-in-the-mud (or just old!) but I can't get on with multipliers, or braid. I doubt the fish know or mind what I'm hoping to haul 'em in with anyway! ??

I wish I could say I gave my reels the same attention. ?

I only use braid for backing line on my reels, mono every time and suits me just fine.
Can you not get spares for you coffee grinder (bale arm roller), far cheaper than buying a new reel when the other one goes belly up.

That's one of the reasons I buy low to mid range kit. Not too attractive stuff when left on board or I drop a creel on something which has been done!

It was a Vertix Dragon reel bought after being so pleased with the Vertix Jack rod, both made by Grauvell in Spain, and as far as I know, they have since gone bust. There is an excellent local reel repair guy who may be able to sort it out, but he's had to shut his unit, & is working from home. I think because of Covid, he is only accepting work via the mail anyway. Meanwhile, I decided to bite the bullet & buy a Penn Surfblaster. Again, due to Covid, nobody had any stock at the time, and that was reflected in 2nd hand prices, with Surfblaster II's going for around £100. So replaced the Dragon with a cheapish Mitchell Blue Water RZ9000, which is quite a good reel, and Mitchell are part of the same company as Penn anyway. And then did a double take recently when a Surfblaster II came up on the local Gumtree for £30! Poor bloke is still bleeding at the wrist from where I bit his hand off! ??
