Daiwa 7 ht

I personally wouldn't use WD40 / white spirit or similar at this stage, I would use lighter fuel. If you do get it off ok which you should, it WILL be ok with new bearings.

So cleaned, reassembled and reoiled and greased. I can spin the spool quite well with my thumb and although is spins quite freely it is noisy so upgrade bearing time. Which bearings would be best suited to this reel? I am using it for fishing not trying to get a lead over the Atlantic ?
I do have a vice but have been warned against that route I will try more soaking in release fluid and see how it goes. I don't think it will take much to move the spindle the crud washed off the bearing very easily. I think new bearings are a good idea anyway they are not too expensive.
Bearings are Toast anyway surfaces and balls will be pitted and wasn't suggesting Laraping it just a sharp tap and if bearing just pushes off spindle easily when in use it will Chatter when casting as the inner will move in spindle as well other side where balls are.

Many of the Gun greases like white will emulsify with salt water moisture.

While you have been dreaming about it ive had an old boat reel type penn to bits which bearings was shagged and one was stuck put small spanner in my vice got bearing in fork so just holding bearing and quick tap dislodged cleaned it all out replaced bearings and bits needed all done ready for them to use.

A soak in Gunk or similar penetrating fluid should get the old bearings moving, if not then tap as above. Scrape the spindle gently with a Stanley blade to remove the worst of any rust then polish with a green scouring pad and a drop of oil for starters. I'd grease the drive train with a brush of Yamaha blue marine or the blue Penn. To me they seem the same. Both came recommended by Alan Tani many years ago when I really got reely. I only use Black 7ht's for summer bass fishing short to medium long ranges over clean sand. My 'tune' is 0.35mm nylon bedded down 2mm from the brim (shockleader on top) 2 red brake blocks and TSR321 oil in the bearings. Others will have their own ways no doubt.
Cons for me are the short twin handle in combination with slow retrieve and lack of ratchet. I prefer the blue Mags for medium to long distance in similar conditions but the magnofuge doesn't kick in on short casts. Both want a pinion support fitting from new in my book.

Thanks for all the information and tips to you ,Thrasher and all the others who have given me ideas. There is no rust I can see so what there is must be between the inner race and the spindle. I think I will give it a gentle tap today and see if it co-operates. I wanted to buy bearings and a pinion support from Blackdog but he is not sending to France at the moment. What I may do is have them sent to my BIL he can then send them on to me. I have been searching for a supplier but cannot find one at all here
I have done a lot of fishing fresh mostly but also Sea however this surf casting malarkey is totally new to me. The area I will be fishing is lovely sandy beaches so no rough ground and the rod and reel I have bought for the job are more or less what is available here. Every man and his mutt use a very long rod and usually a large fixed spool... I have begged to be different and am going to try a multi because that is what I used before, if I cannot get it to work I will buy a fixed spool. Ah well roll on spring is is freezing down here at the moment.

Only need bearing sizes then any engineering shop that does bearings will sell or on line

Two sizes on bearings on spindle it looks like? "Black 7HT"?

Dry it in the tumble dryer. ??

Jambop, have you been drinking mate??

I have not given you any help on this thread as I don't use multipliers and to be honest I am more in the dark than you are.?

Learning however. (y)

Thanks to all for the helpful suggestions. Because of the Brexit situation I am now trying to source these bearings here in France. I have been in touch with Daiwa again so I hope I will be able to get some response from them. Daiwa is a multi national company so their products must be available here.

Good luck with it Jambop ? We're all constantly learning (or should be whilst alive!) so just ask away if you feel you need help. There was good info on 'tuning' the black 7ht on Planet Sea Fishing from memory? Neil Mackellow was the author (no longer with us unfortunately, old 'Black Beard' was a casting god, tackle guru and bloody good egg). Google it perhaps? The control of multies relies on a combination of line level, line diameter, bearing lubrication and braking systems (like magnets and/or blocks) if fitted to prevent disaster. Smooth casting with any power or 'snap' applied late in the cast will reduce all issues. Fixed spools are easy but easy is not always satisfying!

Hi I have managed to persuade the bearing off the spindle. Now here is the thing, there was not one bit of corrosion present nothing at all !! As far as I can see this is not the correct bearing for the reel it is far too tight I have seen vids of them being dismantled and there is no grip on the spindle at all in any I have seen.
The bearing fitted just slips on for a bit then tightens right up on the final bit of it travel, in fact I did not dare force it on again as soon as I felt it tighten I stopped. Secondly I think the bearing is tapered unless the spindle has a taper? It won't look at the spindle in one direction just no way! Also it is a zz bearing I am sure the original is only z ?

So I am slightly quizzical about this. Firstly there is the condition of the reel, it is amazing there are hardly any real marks on it at all. There is a little bit of very light scratching on the edge gold anodised cover, never see one secondhand that is not, and the number ring on the brake end paint has flaked a little other than that it looks new?? I have contacted the seller to ask if he changed the bearing but to be honest I am not angry about my purchase bearings are consumables and upgrades for £40 it is a bargain. It does need new bearings though.

At least you are another step further on in the refurb.

Another twist in the tail. I took a new 6mm drill bit and ran the shank through the bearing passed through but a bit catchy from the tight end ! I then tried the spindle and it will pass in one direction. I think there is a very fine lip on the inner race which is causing the problem, which is why I thought there was a taper on the bearing... total and complete nonsense thinking on my part
I am now thinking shonky replacement bearing that has a fine lip at one end and the guy who had it just pushed the spindle home... of course the lip is catching the spindle when try to remove it from the bearing. Job should be a good'in when I get the new bearings.

If you get stuck with parts etc, try Blackdog tackle. I think he is on here; if not the good old internet search will find him.

I asked at Blackdog but they are not sending abroad so a no go there unfortunately. However following the advice of another poster on here who said if you know the size just find a supplier. I have found a supplier and I believe the sizes are 4 11 4 and 6 13 5 both zz so I can order them now. These bearing may not be as good as those for sale on the specialist reel sites but the will be good enough to cast a bait and that is what I want to do not reach America ?

My Final post on this reel. I have ordered new bearings from a French company so the should be here next week sometime. I have also received an email from the previous owner. He has assured me he had the reel from new and it is more than 20 years old. Said hardly ever used it because he could not cast with it. He said he had never had it apart. Now I can agree with all of that because the all screws were unmarked and the insides were very messy with sticky old lubricants. The reel itself is in a very nice condition hardly a mark on it see photosDSCN4138.JPGDSCN4135.JPGDSCN4137.JPG

ZZ etc are just finish on bearings ie some open while others have shields and others rubber seals one you need really are the metal shielded

Bearings are bearings as long as good enough quality! Just don't Wet your Knickers worrying about them.
There all bought in from somewhere only a few places make them and unless tournament critical casting just normal Stainless steel type will do even cheapo bearings will be ok as long as decent low corrosion oil used maybe have to change sooner?

Funny Steel bearings run better than stainless as can be far harder.
Machine bearings are chromed steel.

Biggest issue is salty moisture to them as Daiwa reels do like a bit of Corrosion! so wipe everything over inc inside sideplates with VP90/ACF50 etc and don't leave in bags/boxes etc which trap moisture and like with ABU/Akios etc remove drive side end often and clean as water gets behind it then builds corrosion.

If you get desperately stuck with getting bearings, I will help if I can, IE order them from Blakdog & send them out. I think you need to ensure that the bearings are the correct grade for a fishing reel due to the Salt water resistance needed. We've got a place in France and I tried to get a set of small roller bearings for a ride-on mower. They wanted 6x what I would normally pay over here. We've found anything parts wise mechanical or motoring is usually a ridiculous price in France.

I just looked up a general bearing supplier. The prices were actually OK but like always the cost of transport is stupid. The bearings sere €7.52 and the transport and packing €7.75 and that is not to my door but to a local deposit pick up! The bearings are stainless zz so much like what Daiwa would use I suppose? Said to be speed rated to 40k rpm with suitable lubrication.
