Hi all,
Its been one of them times where everything has got in the way of visiting the beach. I have found it hard to bring myself to sit and relax looking at rods when so much is going on. We had the sea angling classic with so much fishing involved i was a little numb after it, we didnt do that well in the end and it was partly my fault and i felt quite bad about it considering the efforts we went to to prepare. The fishing before the comp was exceptional but we changed up tactics for the comp and it didnt pay off. There was also alot of early mornings and staying in random hotels and moving lots of boats from different harbours in the build up meaning we we’re absolutely shattered by the first day of the comp. The comp winners “Jason and Liam” really deserved this and were probably the best guys to be awarded such a beautiful boat, designed to target the big game specimen’s that they target at the back of the island. Well done boys will be good to see you out on the water !

Gadget has had a few caressing strokes to give her a little bit of a spruce up. Full acid wash cut, polish, wax. Then to service the outboard and replace the tilt trim motor and a good clean on her bum. Also i made a new removable carbon transducer bracket as the last one was made out of aluminium and had just corroded away. Since then i havent really done much fishing on her apart from stock up on mackerel for chum and take some pleasure cruises over to Dartmouth and back or to take family out to see dolphins. But i have been on a few other new boats in the mean time.

We did a trip out of looe in shark week and blanked !!!! I really didnt expect this despite the skipper’s efforts !

Then a trip out of plymouth on the ling in bad weather and blanked apart from a few pollock! I even thought my aftershave was the issue!

Then last week i decided to get my chum sorted and head straight out 10 miles off torbay to find any toothy creatures that may be there! Dominic was keen to change up his usual wrecking day out to play with the sharks and wanted to run his new twin 200s on his boat Barracuda IMG_0582.jpegso we jumped on board and headed off early. Dom had never caught a blue and it was my objective to get him to hit target and in our own back yard!
The chum was set and i started to rig up the rods and showing the guys what and how we do things. 13ft rubbing leader with inline lead with a swivel at one end and a fast clip the other end. Attached to that was a 6ft trace with muppets and rattles inline and a 10 mustard barbless circle hook. Anodes are really import on these due to using wire and if you dont the hook point fizzes away quite rapidly. We were using fresh ting as hookbaits and pretty deep this time of year, so we would pay out probably 20-25m then attach the floats and set them up with nice distances apart in the slick. After an hr i was into the first fish only for it to drop the hook. We could see the sharks in the slick and they were playing with the floats and not the baits. So we shallowed everything up to 5-10m and the day just flowed with sharks

Simon was next and hooked into a baby about 30-40lb

At this point we did the baby shark dance and that seamed to have awoken mummy shark!

Doms rod was absolutely nailed and line was peeling off at an alarming rate then he sunk the hook and started the fight and everything was benign until she came to the side of the boat. For his first blue he had caught an 87inch qualifier and was so made up she was unhooked and away she went ! With high fives all around, this all being in a spot we never thought we would catch blues at!

This fish was boated as we had to get the hook out and it was deep, this was taken just before Dom put her over the side. The day carried on like this with 5 to the boat and a couple of missed runs we headed back to base in time for beer o clock!

This then set the precedent for the next few days of calm, we had a little group chat and a couple of mates decided to head on down for some toothy fun

Well over the 3 days we had sharks into double figures and some amazing sport right on my doorstep! Who would have known and all these years ive been driving down to Cornwall !

I managed to get some epic shots and video clips and will at some point find time to put them together, but in the meantime this is a short clip of one of the days out.

Sharking just offshore from Torquay

I havent posted much on the tube lately just because i havent been able to get my head around editing so much footage from so many sessions! Im going to have to tackle it over a few days as currently i have 25tb of 4k footage to sort through.

Now im just waiting for the tide to drop so i can dig some fresh blacks and head to the big beach as its cod time with 2m swell and 20knts onshore “i love this time of year”

Stay Happy all and Tightlines

They cods are there, one from Sunday...20230723_081328.jpg

Fabulous report & photos Dave! Some nice Boats there too! 🦈🦈🎣🎣👍👍

East or West?
silver of flatish.
Middle, big bucket head of a cod! Just head not much body.

I played around with it back and forth and each time got it to a point where i thought i could run down and get it, but i couldnt get there intime.

I was trying to buy a bite with 30lb snood and it parted where the top hook was rubbing on the knot of the bottom hook. I had exactly the same thing happen 2 years ago.

Before you said about walking down tide with it to give a chance to beach itself. I tried this and failed.

It will be interesting what shows up this year, i think we shall see a few 20’s
