“Are you going fishing this weekend?” Asked the wife, “nah, after this weeks bout of tonsillitis, I’ll probably give it a miss” says I. “Well can you please? I need some whiting for a starter I’m planning for a dinner party” was her response. So after rooting through the freezer, a box of squid and a few wraps of frozen blacks found themselves in the rucksack and I found myself at 7am on the harbour arm in Hastings old town watching the sun rise. The two rods were rigged up with two hook clipped down rigs baited with lug and they were soon sent seawards and I sat back and enjoyed the warmth of the sun on my face with that joy or just being there that all anglers understand. On the fishing front, the bites started almost immediately, but they were small pin whiting a double shot at a time. 34D0D658-E8FA-4C88-8FC1-DF16E3D09990.jpegI soon changed over to larger hooks and lug and squid cocktails in the hope of larger whiting. The harbour was busy, with small boat anglers launching and the fishing fleet coming and going, it was a pleasure to just be there, B7A95626-35AB-4F59-9F8B-2D03B4A292FE.jpeg24F8BD5A-81DA-4BB4-855E-69DE13E78D13.jpeg375A9E13-0F21-4932-9711-BFA9F78DF74F.jpeg172633F3-6144-4F42-A5EB-07F5F4E8E611.jpegthe addition of squid slowed the pin whiting down and the whiting that did hit the beach were keepers, which pleased the wife. I lost count of how many I had, but brought 7 home for the freezer. It was like a spring day and I was even treated to the sight of the Hastings lifeboat being launched E4BC05B1-DE13-4F90-B2CB-A51CDBF1C9DC.jpegwifey came down for a dog walk and we sat and watched the sea swimmers and paddle boards going back and forth. I called it a day at 11am and went home for a fry up and a trip to Morrisons…
