So, last night started with digging a few snakes before getting to my mark just as the water approached the shingle. This coincided with the light fading and I had a good feeling about the session.
Both rods were loaded with fresh lug and sent to the horizon even though I was probably only fishing in 10” of water at this point. Well I wasn’t waiting long when one of the rods started to show signs of life. I picked it up and felt a sudden pull, striking hard, I hooked in and soon landed a hound of 4lbs 2oz. Not a bad start. Before long, the bait was back in the water and ready for round 2.
Just then, the other rod pulled down before going slack. This resulted in a slender bass of 44cm but just 1lbs 13oz.
As I returned the fish, the other rod folded over and line was being stripped off. I grabbed the rod and could feel the fish fighting but the weight was not as much as I’d hoped. Hound No.2 hit the shingle at 4lbs 1oz, the bite far exceeding the fish!
Over the next hour, I landed 2 bootlace snot-serpents but that was my lot. I fished up to HW and nearly an hour down when it started to get weedy so I cut my losses and packed up.
During this time, I witnessed the weirdest thing. Something emerged from the shore to the East of me with a red light on it, I thought it was just a boat as I was sure I could hear an engine. However, as it got away from the shore, it opened up and moved faster than anything I’ve seen, faster than I think a boat is capable. In under a minute, it was out by the wind farm and within 3 minutes had turned west and disappeared over the horizon towards Essex. I genuinely don’t know what it was and it still baffles me.
On the plus side, my last cast saw me retrieve a rig I’d lost here last week! Result!!
