So on Wednesday and Thursday I fished Brixham whilst introducing a friend a Sea fishing. He'd recently moved back from London so was good to get him out fishing again now he's back in the West Country. On day one we fished the breakwater with sea tech barracuda jigs. Non stop mackerel action ensued. I'd estimate we had over 100 each by the end of the day. The average size was fairly good. Still can't get over how many are still there in January! Enjoyed seeing the seals luckily they didn't steal any of our fish. An elderly gent joined us on the steps as we were leaving and he caught a nice sized herring on sabikis first cast. I'll have to try that myself next time.
The second day saw us fishing from Oxen Cove car park with ragworm, micro sandeel lures, berkley gulp and metals. There bites were not as hectic as the previous day but still consistent. First drop in produced a rock goby on ragworm. The next 3 hours were dominated by pollock to about a 1 lb max to my micro lures and my friends float fished rag. I switched over to the metal jigs and picked up a few mackerel before something big hit it close in. My rod doubled over and after 2 big dives the braid cut on the rocks... Gutted. My spirits were soon lifted by 2 big mackerel I estimate at 2lb that fought really hard. As the sun was setting we switched to drop shot berkley gulp and proceeded to catch a lot of nice ballan and corkwing wrasse. As the light levels evaporated we began catching chunky pouting before packing up and heading back to Wiltshire. A really enjoyable session and great for my mate to catch his first Sea fish. Brixham really is a unbelievable venue.
