Fixed spools for me from the beach/rocks/boat. I've had multis in the past, I just got fed up with such a slow retrieve which was a hindrance on the rocks, plus I find holding the rod with a multi very uncomfortable, well the reeling in part is atleast.
I will add that I've used fixed spools for about 30 years on freshwater stuff so kind of natural that I'd have stuck with/preferred them for sea fishing.
Nothing wrong with either, just a case of horses for courses.

Went in West Bay Angling a few years ago to buy a couple of rods and reels.Took quite a fancy to a pair of Vercelli Enygma Taktika rods(Tats Chicken Rods)and a pair of Shimanos.Picked the rod off the display stand to have a look at it and the owner said "Please don't do that sir"I put it back and said you've just lost a 600.00 pound sale and walked out.He didn't look too pleased.
I seem to remember there were two tackle shops there at the time. The first one I walked in, the owner was busy talking to a mate, and totally blanked me. I stood there for 5mins, gave up & walked out. The 2nd shop was a lot more helpful. It was a long time ago so can't remember what the shops were called.

West Bay Angling large and on the corner going in,has it's own car park. The other was opposite side of the road and very small, think it has now gone.
Yep, just had a look at Google street view, and there is a glitch that turns the clock back to 2009. Potter's tackle - you can still see it. I think that must have been where I went first, and then went into West Bay angling on the way back to the car park. It must have been around 20 years ago - I've been with Wifey 24 years and we were up in Dorset visiting her sister.

Never used a Mangle/Whisk in my 48 years of fishing, (apologies to all fixed spool users, especially you Jackjock ;)) started off with an old Mitchel multi, and have been a multi user ever since.

No need for a apology because i don,t get offended , a few years ago fixed spool reels where terrible with bad line twist , very heavy and built more like tractors but today modern fixed spool reels are a work of art but i can understand old habits die hard and some folks love there multi,s.

I guess this was prompted by our conversation last night?
I voted for both but use multis for almost all my beach fishing.
I’ll state at the outset my casting isn’t brilliant (although I’m trying to learn the pendulum) but for most of my local marks, distance isn’t necessary.
I can easily put a bait further with a FS.

But… I just find multis so much nicer to fish with. It feels more direct to me, better contact with the fish, easy to adjust drag, ratchet setting, easy to pick up the tripod and move back up the beach.
And when the ratchet screams off when a good hound takes it, there’s nothing like it.
Certainly beats the ‘rod bouncing off down the shingle’ comments I read so often on forums! Always always set a drag, even if you have to unscrew it on the spool, if that’s the only way the reel does it.

I do use FS for feathering. Learned to feather with one and trying to do it with a multi just feels totally wrong.
I also use them exclusively for estuary flattie fishing where you’re mostly just lobbing baits a few yards.
And I use them for float fishing, or mullet fishing on the rare occasions I do it.

I certainly don’t ‘look down’ on anyone who uses a FS, so many do, after all and it’s about catching fish, not what you use.

Just for myself, I’ve used both a lot and far far prefer a multi on my beachcaster than a FS.
But if the choice was FS or not go fishing, I’d definitely use the FS!

That's interesting Mr Fish! When we used to feather lots of mackerel/herring for 'dubby trail' fishing using a constant stream of fresh chunks cut and flicked off the bait board along with a mincer (that fed a drain pipe dripper to create a mass slick
bellow the surface hoping to avoid too much gull action and put the trail where we wanted it) that not only created a trail for the predators but a strong source that often also kept the macs close to the boat, I'd get called Mr Greedy when using a large centrepin with 18 crushed barb feathers, but very often they all came on board or had very few drop-offs. I remain convinced fast retrieve reels like FS and hi speed M's rip out many hooked bait fish.

I use both a multi & a FS for feathering ,& spinning, but do prefer using a multi,I find I have more control on a multi than a FS
