plaice rigs

I've never fished Torbay, but I think Bob has had some decent results, especially for his species hunt.
The likes of Hope's nose & Berry head aren't easy to get to, unless in the peak of fitness & youth, and they frequently get rammed with foreigners filling dustbins with undersized fish.
I think John has got a few good local marks, especially for Bass, but no chance of me getting near them.
I have over the years enjoyed some decent fish from the beach through the tunnel at Shaldon but never seen any other reports. Never mega sessions but good bags of huss and rays. Just fish baits at 80 yards nothing clever.

Can get some decent hounds of there some times . Also bass when its horrible.

Haha! No good to me Pete. Fish to catch to eat. If I wanted to catch Hounds and Rays, I just as well go coarse fishing for Mud Pigs!

I very rarely bother with either slapton or beesands anymore i spend more time at chesil . Even tho its a bit further a field it doesnt take much longer and the roads are far better . I still blank in amongst some great sessions up there but i always feel optimistic going there rather than driving to beesands get stuck behind a caravan , then my car falls down a pothole in the road . I arrive pissed of just to be cruel to a lb of ragworm or peeler .

Yes I like Hopes Nose but wouldn’t bother these days with all the (human) trash down there.
Berry Head similar as you say.

Brixham breakwater good for mackie, few wrasse and eels, gars and herring in season, not a great deal else.

Species hunt. Erm, not for me!

Ness Beach ..........

At the right time of year, it can also throw up Smoothounds to 15lb.

I don't shore fish, but I have caught them from the boat, and probably within beach casting distance.

With regard to Beesands / Slapton, all I can say is that the Skerries has been showing decent Plaice early this year. I am just waiting for a weather window to make the 20 mile steam down there.

I hate slapton the drive kills me 🤦🏻 but my mates love it around xmas big ting hounds and spurs still got night mares from the day of a thousand ting I 😮 my best plaice beach is 12 min drive from my house and cogden only 40 mins there do as for original post yep bragnell bar or 2 hook loop with 36 inch snoods are my go to plaice rigs With a plain lumi weight to get that bugger move ing plaice love a bit of movement and don’t be scared to tip the worm baits fresh Mac squid even a fillet of sabdeel can increase chances i usally use 6 to 8 coloured beads green and black my faves and don’t do your bait stop up tight to the beads leave them so they can clack together a wise bearded dog owning angler taught me that 👌

Have you been out lately?
Nope, not been out for a dangle anywhere yet this year.
Had 2 spells of Jeepy being off the road for MOT & repairs, Wifey also had it for over a week after she pranged her Chariot, and still pretty rough with the Chest infection she kindly donated to me.
Got to see the Chest consultant in 2 weeks time so hoping he'll do something to improve things.

No, I don't fancy Spotted Goby or similar on Toast either!

I took a break from the lures on Tuesday and fished Slapton with a mate, had a small Plaice on first cast and thought it was going to be a good session, it wasn't, that was the only fish had between us., ( on the plain side of a wishbone, black n green beads on other side, as this thread is about plaice rigs:D)
As for Torbay, summer is the best time, there's a few Wrasse, Congers, Mackerel and odd Pollock coming out so my bait fishing mates tell me, bit more variety with the minis, but they can be a bit hit and miss, the weather over the winter hasn't been as kind to us this year.

Sounds like some fresh air would be just the thing!.
Fishing to take table species is an interesting subject down the SW the reality is that that means bass and bream along with Maks being the most available table fish.
Is that generally your target species?

I reckon Slapton must get quite a few anglers fishing it because its easy access and easy to find.
To me it always looks so fishy for flats its like textbook habitat.
I always look at the match results expecting to see some flats but I guess its just one of those places that looks perfect but the fish dont know that!.
I think if I lived closer I would try and "crack" it.
Its interesting I got talking to a chap in the car park at cogden who said 90% of the time I fish xxxxx beach.
I asked him what he got there and he reeled off his fishing year and his returns from that beach..... but he did not mention bass at all.
Its my most productive bass beach and can fish its nuts off for them.
He gets rays at range and big wrasse and huss in Autumn.
Its a matter of approach, I bet there's a few anglers that specialise in Slapton and I bet they get different returns.

Not targetted Bream or Bass - did catch a couple of schoolies last year which were safely returned. Absolutely love Mackerel, but they have been a bit scarce, and not a great size in recent years. Did have a small Pollock when out with John, which was a surprise.
Watch a lot of Troy's Youtube videos and he was pulling some Mackerel in at 40cms and over last year, though admittedly from his boat.
Love Plaice too, but not seriously targetted them in recent years, and reading the forums, too early yet, they are still very thin.
A trip to Slapton or Beesands for salty fresh air will be on the cards when I can shift this crap out of my chest, and it warms up a little more.

Other than that, I've had to resort to angling for the Supermarket species!

I agree with Pete im sure there is some slapton specialists about who get great results . But for me my results from that beach have deteriorated to the point i cant really be arsed with the place . Ive had some lovely black bream , hounds and some red mullet just short of a lb in weight from there ten years ago . I go a couple of times in winter to bash the whiting and thats it .
Trampster you never know a good blow of fresh air might help clear your chest get some clean air in your lungs mate 🤞

If you fish to eat what do you target?.

I used to swear by long up n over wishbone rigs but found a 3 hook clip down to be just as effective unless fishing at extreme range.
I completely agree with this, when they are feeding you could use any rig... but when its hard and your trying to winkle one out your chances massively improve if you can swing a blinged up worm across the bottom.
If they are feeding confidently then I often switch to a 3 hook loop rig.

As someone who knows sod all about it.. why should the choice of rig be considered.. ?
Bait on a hook equals fish.. or am I missing something..?
Plaice can be caught any method on any bait.... thats true.
But they are probably also the species that offer you the best chance of increased bags with a technical approach.
You want to catch one you can go with a bent pin and bacon rind you want to catch lots you best have a game plan.
