South Coast A little trip away ...

I recently had the opportunity to head out to Fuerteventura on a fishing expedition. A good friend, Shaun Conlane, has just moved out to Dubai, and couldn't go on the trip, and very kindly offered me his flight tickets. I gratefully jumped at the chance to get away and see somewhere new and...

South Coast Back at it ...

I decided to nip out last night just before midnight at the Maseline Harbour. It's really taking a lot to get motivated to fish at this time of year, alone. To be honest, I have missed the bait fishing this year, with that damn rotator-cuff injury that lasted nine months. However, I am not sure...

    South Coast THE LOST COLONY

THE BLACK PELICAN BRIEF: MY JOURNEY TO OBX IN SEARCH OF RED DRUM After a year or so of discussing visiting Black Pelican Custom Rods owner Brandon Elinich, I finally got the flights booked. I was headed on the adventure of a lifetime to North Carolina's picturesque Outer Banks Islands. My...

MENTAL HEALTH / THAT TIME OF YEAR - WE CAN DO BETTER

DO WE NEED TO TAKE A LONG HARD LOOK AT OURSELVES? As a habit, I spend as little time as possible keeping up with anglers' social media pages, though I am following hundreds or even thousands, mostly in the UK. This week, I have had others point out the sheer volume of negativity and moaning...

    South Coast A few from 2022 ...

Hi Guys, It's been a long while since I have had time to post. I have been busy writing articles for Sea Angler, working, and on GF duty. But I thought I'd share some of the fish that meant something. The last shot is from the Isle of Mull, a week or two back. I could have fished a lot...

South Coast LIVING EVERY MOMENT ...

If you'd said to me on February 1st that I'd have two new PB's this month, I'd have laughed, as Feb 2021 was so poor, blighted by dogs. The island is fishing sensationally well at this time of year, and I haven't even been near a bass mark. I nipped out at last light yesterday, armed with a bag...

South Coast The hunt for winter Ballan's ...

A few shots whilst out searching for Ballan's a week or so back. For anyone who fancies a read; they are in the latest issue of Sea Angler Magazine, out a couple of days ago. Have a great weekend, all. Cheers Chris Instagram: atlanticdriftfishing Facebook: Atlantic Drift Fishing

South Coast LRF for adrenaline junkies ...

I am in the latest issue of Sea Angler (out today) with an article about the most fun you can have on very light rods, I talk about which species are the hardest fighting and many other things. Here are a few pics from the article ... PS I broke my LRF PB for pollock, with a 4-10 fish that had...

South Coast Conger ... finally one that pulled back.

Some good news for me, a nice surprise to get the cover with my latest article. I can't give you the contents, yet, but, I probably can post it after a month. Or, if you want to read the magazine, it's out now, online or in shops. It's a good read, including double figure ray, huss and conger on...

South Coast Short session yesterday afternoon - Wrasse + Black Bream

Hi guys, A few fish from this afternoon on metal jigs and Black Minnow’s. Nothing to set the world fire, but some hood sport on a light rod. The black bream went particularly well, tearing line off the reel. Cheers Chris...

South Coast Squid & Cuttle Instructional Piece

Hi guys, Sea Angler's latest issue was out yesterday, if any of you are interested in learning about squid and cuttle fishing; I've written quite an expansive piece for the magazine. If it's not of interest, please ignore it, as I have no intention of spamming you guys. I hope you enjoy...

South Coast Wrassing with the Black Minnow ...

The angling obsession has its grip on me at the moment; aside from work, it's pretty much all I can think about lately. Yesterday, I almost nipped out at 3am to try for bass with bait in an isolated cove but, the lack of sleep and the idea of clambering over hellish slippy rocks and weed in the...

South Coast ^^^ BULL HUSS ON A CARP ROD ^^^

After Friday nights long hikes for little reward, I had a few glasses of red wine on Saturday at our island bonfire night and took it easy. My sleeping pattern has been all out of sync because of fishing lately, and I ended up awake in the small hours of the morning wondering if I should try to...

South Coast Getting beaten up by fish, long walks and the cold.

Well, last night was thoroughly unenjoyable in the cold, approximately a 2 mile walk each way to the spot, plus a mile or so extra, as I remembered I had left my reels on the dining room table. I think the total was 5 or 6 eels, only to 12-14 (2 doubles). I missed a couple of hard runs which...

South Coast Dogfish & Strappy Eel Avoidance - Lure Session

After being thoroughly beaten up by straps, dogs and sand fleas in my last 3 sessions on bait, I couldn't quite shake my angling addiction, so I grabbed a lure rod instead. I probably fished for 1.5 hours starting just before sunset and finishing at dusk. It was black bream every chuck for a...

South Coast I've had better nights ...

I haven't been putting any successes I've had up lately, as they are being put in full articles, which I'll roll out in due course when I get time. This image was as good as it got all night, I had a 4 mile round trip. Lost a very big eel thanks to a VMO swivel fail (that was a first). Other...

South Coast A tired report from this morning .... rods didn't stop.

I nipped out at 3am for a few casts and didn't leave until 8 or 9am. I had 23 black bream (pest size), 6 1/2 couches (see pic), squid to 2lb 2oz's (35cm), quite a nice sized cuttle and about 4 that hung on to my skerries eel until they reached the surface, as well my first pout on the island...
